PMFL

‘You live a new life for every language that you speak. If you only know one language you only live once.’ Czech proverb

Learning a foreign language enables children not only to learn about other cultures but also and more importantly how to communicate with others. Many children at our school already speak two or three languages. Being able to speak to someone in another language is a privilege and a skill, allowing understanding of similarities and differences. Whole class teaching of PMFL (French) allows all children a shared experience of language learning. This enjoyable and exciting experience, at KS2, focuses on children being engaged in lessons where mastering new phrases and learning to communicate them effectively is at the core of learning.

Key concepts

  • Culture

  • Conversation

  • Story and oracy

As a result of learning at KS2 children develop into linguists who have the confidence to speak in a new language, with appropriate intonation and pronunciation. They are able to use language with spontaneity. Most importantly they develop into children who are good communicators, inquisitive, resilient and are keen to develop a strong interest in the world around them.
