The teachers in Class 1 are Mrs Virsiliene (Mon, Tue, Wed) and Miss Breeze (Thu, Fr). Our TA is Mrs LePoidevin.
We have a very busy term ahead. In the Summer Term our topic is At the seaside. For more detailed overview please look at Y1 Summer term curriculum overview on your child’s class page.
In Year 1 we develop phonics, reading, writing and maths skills. We use the new national curriculum as the foundation of our planning. The children will participate in a mixture of whole class teaching, small group focus tasks with the teacher/teaching assistant. In June all of the children in year 1 will be taking a Phonics Screening Check. The Phonics Screening Check is meant to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify students who need extra phonics help. The Department for Education defines the checks as “short, light-touch assessments” that take about four to nine minutes to complete.
In preparation for the check, phonics teaching in the Summer term will be focused on the graphemes that the children find most difficult and on the blending skills. Please help your child practise at home too. Information about sites and apps to use at home is on your child’s class page called "Phonics sites and apps".
The children will continue to take the class mascot, 'Gaila the Giraffe', home for showing fantastic behaviour and our school’s Christian values. Gaila will come with the book, so your child will be able to stick pictures/write about their adventures in it. They will then be able to share the events with the rest of the class.
On Mondays the children will be going swimming. Please make sure they have their swimming costumes, towels, swimming hats and goggles (parental consent for wearing goggles is needed.)
On Fridays the children will be playing ball games.
All children are expected to change for Physical Education (PE).
Please ensure the children have full PE kit in school and it is labelled. We will have some of our PE sessions outdoors, so please make sure they have jogging bottoms and a hooded top in school too. We will continue to send kits home at the end of each half term.
Children will continue to get a new set of spellings every Friday. They will be taught these spellings in school before they take them home to practise.
What you can do to help your child at home:
Please listen to your child read every night. It would be useful if you could write in their diary what page they have read to or if they have finished the book. That way we will know whether or not your child needs a new book to take home.
Some children will have Year 1 common exception words written in their reading diaries every so often so please help your child to practise reading them.
Also at the beginning of Spring term the children were given a laminated list of common exception words on coloured paper that they still need to be practising to read.
Thank you for your support
