    Rights Respecting School

At St Thomas Cantilupe school we learn about the United Nations Convention of Rights of the Child and what it takes to be a Rights Respecting School. As we want children to 'shine bright' their lights we want our community to be one in which children are given the tools to grow into confident, caring and responsible young citizens.

By learning about their rights, our pupils, your children also learn about respecting the rights of others and their personal responsibilities. The RRS award links directly to children's understanding of what British Values means to them.

What does RRS look like at St Thomas Cantilupe School?
Children learn about the rights and discuss them in assemblies and during PSHE and other lessons. RRS is interwoven into our curriculum. Moreover, RRS shapes out behaviour management approach. Every class draws up a charter at the start of the year which is agreed on by all pupils and staff. The behaviour approach is centred around respect, dignity and relationships. Our school is a happy, safe and respectful place and RRS is a whole school approach.

The views of the children are taken seriously. Pupils have made changes such as new clubs based on their interest and new campaigns around issues they feel passionate about.

Why become a Rights Respecting School?

This approach has been shown to improve wellbeing and support children to develop to their full potential. We have found that it has improved children’s and young people’s respect for themselves and others and contributed to children and young people being more engaged in their learning.
