Supporting your child with reading in EYFS and KS1
Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.
There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:
A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.
A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.
Reading practice book in EYFS and KS1
This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency, expression and confidence in reading.
Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
Sharing book in EYFS and KS1
In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.
Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
Reading log for all families
Logging reading from home is an important part of supporting children’s progress. When families record reading on Boom Reader, it gives teachers a clear picture of how often children are reading, what they enjoy, and where extra support may be needed. It also strengthens the partnership between home and school, allowing us to celebrate children’s efforts and spot any patterns quickly. Each child has their own Boom Reader login, which families can use to record reading at home. If you need another login or are unsure how to use the app, please speak to your class teacher, who will be happy to help. Consistent logging shows children that reading is valued, helps build good habits, and ensures we can work together to develop confident, enthusiastic readers.

Reading in KS2
In Key Stage 2, children are expected to read at home at least four times each week. Regular reading builds fluency, deepens comprehension, and helps children develop confidence with longer and more challenging texts. At this stage, children should be reading a mixture of their school reading book, library books, and any other texts that interest them. We encourage families to talk with their children about what they are reading, as this supports understanding and develops important higher‑level skills such as inference and prediction. All reading at home is logged using Boom Reader, which helps maintain strong communication between home and school and allows us to celebrate children’s efforts and progress.
